How to brew using a Nel Pot
Step 1
If you’re using a new Nel filter, remove it from its hoop to soak it in boiling water for 5 minutes.
Step 2
While your Nel filter is soaking, grind your beans to a coarse setting. It should be the same consistency required for a French Press.
Step 3
Remove the Nel filter from the water and wring it out. Place it on a towel to finish drying.
Step 4
Place the filter back on its hoop once it’s dry. Heat your Nel Pot by rinsing it with boiling water, and then empty the pot.
Step 5
Pour your grounds into the filter, being careful not to compress any grounds.
Step 6
Using a bamboo paddle (or a butter knife), gently work your way around the grounds using a sawing motion to level the bed without compressing any grounds.
Step 7
Place your Nel Pot on a scale, and zero it out. Make a shallow indentation about the size of a nickel in the center of the grounds.
Step 8
Bring your water to a boil, and allow it to cool to 175°F. Begin your first pour by slowly going around the outside of your indentation. Do not saturate the grounds. This should take you about 45 seconds for 45 grams of water. Pause for 45 seconds before beginning your second pour.
Step 9
Begin your second pour, which should take 60 seconds for 80 grams of water. Be sure to keep it centered for the duration of your pour. Pause and wait 20 seconds.
Step 10
Begin your final pour, which should take 30 seconds for 60 grams of water. Your yield will be 185 grams of water poured in 3 minutes and 20 seconds.
Use the remaining water to preheat your cups as Nel Pots can produce a slightly cooler coffee. Heating your cup will bring back some of that warmth.
Pro Tip: Do not microwave this coffee because it will shock it and alter the flavor.
